Important work on regional infectious disease surveillance continues to be one of NTI's highest priorities. NTI's GHSI has officially launched "Connecting Health Organizations for Regional Disease Surveillance" (CHORDS) to serve as a building block toward global cooperation and communication on effective disease surveillance. NTI's Global Health and Security Initiative, together with the University of Edinburgh, convened a workshop in Phnom Penh, Cambodia from November 18-20, 2008. Faculty and health ministry staff from the Mekong region explored pathways to increase in-country human capital via mentorship, faculty training and degree offerings for frontline health workforce. A path forward will allow health professionals to effectively contribute towards improved health security of the Mekong Basin region and participate in global networks for coordinated health security action.

The Nuclear Threat Initiative's Global Health and Security Initiative (GHSI) and Fondation Mérieux (FMx) have announced that 10 scholarships have been awarded to graduate students in Cambodia and Laos that will allow these veterinary and epidemiology professionals to earn online degrees while continuing to provide critical health care in their home countries. The Middle East Consortium on Infectious Disease Surveillance (MECIDS) has been recognized by the Computerworld Honors Program for its work to create a unique technology to enhance data-sharing and epidemiological surveillance. The Public Health Information Affinity Domain is a secure Web-based portal system that can help contain and minimize the impact of diseases throughout the region.
